Background:
Barring a few months last year, I've worked for Sun since late 1999. I started in the Australian support centre, moved into the global CPR Escalation organisation and spent a few years in PTS while feeling the gravitational pull of storage driver sustaining and product development. In 2005 I moved into the Leadville (fibrechannel) development team. My role in that team was made redundant last year so I spent a few months outside the reservation before getting a foot back inside with a contract to work on Serial-Attached SCSI. I've been known to work on such tools as Solaris CAT (mostly the x86/x64 and san parts), and the tape drive diagnostic data gathering tool st_diag. Prior to working for Sun I was a Solaris system admin at two Australian universities and I've been using Sun hardware and software since late 1990. I am also a longstanding member of HUMBUG, the Home Unix Machine, Brisbane, User Group.Gaps:
While I have built and bfu'd my own kernels, I haven't been game to touch Xorg.Motivation:
My primary motivation is to resolve the gaps between what we know today as OpenSolaris and what I believe it can be --- the most usable, developer- and user-friendly Unix on the planet.Goals:
In no particular order, and riffing on Al Hopper's email to cab-discuss:- To help grow the OpenSolaris developer community (particularly in the Asia-Pacific region) through encouraging conference participation, trade shows and university appearances
- To provide a highly usable Defect Management System which allows a OpenSolaris contributor to perform queries, enter or update records, and "own" bugs
- Prioritize the rollout of the Mercurial Source Control Management system
- Establish a mechanism to provide regular idea interchange and consultation between the OGB and Sun executive management
Summary:
James McPherson lives on the east coast of Australia where he writes storage software for Sun Microsystems. When he's not working, he enjoys photography and plays with his cat. His wife wishes he wouldn't spend quite so much time taking photos, and enjoys playing with the cat too.
